Nutrition Month Highlights

March is Nutrition Month in Canada—a time to reflect on how food supports our health, well-being, and connection to one another. As we move out of winter, many are thinking about fresh starts and healthier routines. But for some in our community, the question isn’t what to eat—it’s whether there is enough.
Rising food costs are straining Canadian households. In 2026, the average family of four will spend nearly $17,571 on food—up $994.63 in a year—while the average income is $57,698 to cover all basic needs, many families are feeling the gap more than ever.
For families falling behind, this often means skipping fresh, nutritious foods or going without. It can mean skipping fresh produce, choosing lower-cost options that lack nutritional value,
or going without.
Nutrition is about more than food groups; It’s about access, dignity, and the ability to make choices that support your health. Barriers like cost, transportation, and time make that difficult—especially after winter, when budgets are stretched and fresh food can feel out of reach.
That’s where community-based programs make a difference.
At People for a Healthy Community (PHC), we are committed to ensuring no one on Gabriola goes hungry. Through our weekly food programs, people can access fresh produce, protein, and pantry staples. We also recover surplus food—sharing what we can, supporting local agriculture, and composting the rest to nourish community gardens.
Nutrition Month is a reminder that small actions matter. Planning meals, using leftovers, or sharing food with neighbours all help build a stronger, more food-secure community.
Together, we can ensure everyone on Gabriola has access to nourishing food. Our pantry stock dwindles at this time of year. Help us fill the shelves by donations.
