Children & Youth Programs
At People for a Healthy Community, we believe every child and youth deserves the opportunity to grow, learn, and thrive with access to nourishing food and supportive connections. Our Children & Youth programs are rooted in this vision—helping to reduce food insecurity while creating spaces where young people feel cared for, included, and empowered. Research shows that school food programs not only increase access to fruits and vegetables, but also support physical and mental well-being, strengthen social connections, and contribute to greater success in the classroom.

Hot Lunch Program
Every Wednesday, we provide to the Gabriola Elementary School a ‘pay what you can’ Hot Lunch at the elementary school. By providing nutritious meals, students’ learning ability and health is supported. Community and PAC volunteers and supporters are key to the success of this program.

Emergency Snacks & Lunches
With donations from Nester’s Food Market, we provide sandwiches, fruit, and cheese & crackers to stock the fridge at the elementary school. This is for any student who may need it and addresses hunger amongst early learners

School Garden Program
During Spring and Fall, every class at the elementary school is invited to rotate through the PHC gardens located on The Commons property. Through hands-on activities, students learn about their food system and plant, tend, harvest, and eat food from the gardens. The students grow food that is used in the Hot Lunch Program and community programs.
