March 2024 Newsletter

Lots of things going on this month. This newsletter was inspired by the fact that March is Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day is May 8th. And, if you hadn’t noticed, PHC has been fortunate to have attracted a very large number of women. Some are paid staff, but the large majority of them are volunteers. Far too many to mention them all – but next month we will profile some of them who have been with us for many years and who continue to be wherever they are needed.

The Good Food Box

One new initiative is worth a few words. In partnership with Nanaimo Food Share, bags of vegetables are being delivered to Gabriolans for only a $15 donation. Since the end of November we have distributed 600 of these bags. One recipient told us that we are “really changing his diet”. If you would like to participate you can find more information on our website.

MediGo Van

Our new programme to assist Gabriolans needing to go to Nanaimo for medical appointments or treatments is called MEDIGO. Those who find difficulty in travelling can register and book a ride on the PHC website or by phoning 250-325-7311. We are working with other existing organisations, such as Drivers to Doctors, (Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care) Gabriola Taxi and others to pool our collective resources to provide the best possible service. The first of these van trips, scheduled for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, has been set for March 19th.

Hospice Training

On another subject, our Hospice Training session was completed providing a new group of volunteers who, in various ways, will provide assistance to those nearing the end of their lives.  The training was overseen by Claudia Brann – thank you.

Staff Update

On the staffing front we are sad that our Food Bank organiser, Emily Carson-Apstein will be leaving us in June. Her work with the Grocery programme has been astounding. Fortunately, someone who is no stranger to PHC, Tami Craig, will be taking over.
