Seniors Program Assistant

Part-time Position: 20-25 hours per week (Thursday-Monday)

Scope of Work

Working under the direction of the Seniors Program Coordinator, the Program Assistant plans, implements, and assists in evaluating the activity day program, or to other PHC Seniors Programs such as education and awareness, visiting, research, and wellness activities, contributing to improved physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual health and wellness of participants.


The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

Duties:
  • Coordinates and/or carries out recreation activities including but not limited to: arts and crafts, music, social events, entertainment, games, cooking, storytelling, drama, and cognitive and physical activity exercises.

  • Encourages client participation in group and individual program activities, based on participant needs and goals, encouraging a welcoming and inclusive environment.

  • Monitors and communicates participant progress to the Program Coordinator and assists in maintaining e-records and documenting client care plans and regular program evaluations.

  • Oversees the volunteer and staff team in all program activities including lunch service and recreational activities.

  • Provides leadership and support to volunteers and staff and helps to coordinate volunteer training days.

  • Organizes and prepares activity supplies and materials, and assists with supply purchases.

  • Assists with program administration including weekly attendance monitoring, contributing to monthly activity calendars, copying of program handouts, and keeping participants informed of upcoming events and program changes.

  • Ensures a safe and comfortable environment for all participants, is attentive to risk management during program activities, and reports safety issues.

  • Ensures that all public health and Island Health safety protocols are adhered to.

  • May provide other outreach activities to the participants when the program is not able to meet in-person (lunch deliveries, ZOOM calls, phone calls).

  • Participates in weekly seniors' team meetings and monthly community care management meetings.

  • Attends staff training and development opportunities.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Education, Training And Experience: Graduation from a recognized recreation, social services or health care program plus one year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • At least one year of experience working with older adults in a group setting.

  • A warm personality with empathy and understanding of the needs of individuals with early memory loss.

  • Basic First Aid and CPR or willing to obtain.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to vehicles

  • Ahearance to Public Health and Island Health vaccination requirements

  • Must be able to work a regular schedule on Saturdays.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Ability to follow direction, as well as working independently.

  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and written.

  • Ability to act in a vacation relief capacity for the coordinator.

  • Physical ability to carry out duties of position; program set up of tables and chairs, assisting seniors with mobility issues, etc.

  • Strong computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) or Chromebook

Terms of Employment:
  • Hours of work: 20-25 hours/week

  • Rate of pay $23 - $27/hour
