PHC Board Member Nominations


Are you interested in joining PHC's Volunteer Board of Directors?


Our directors commit to a two-year term, and active membership on one of our committees. The Nominating Committee is always keen to receive expressions of interest in board positions. New directors are usually elected at the AGM, held in the late fall, but we are happy to hear from you at any time. Click here to download a form indicating your interests and skills. Thank you!


We are grateful for your interest in the activities of the Board. Although all applicants may not be able to serve as directors at any given time, we will encourage you to join one of our very active committees or volunteer in other capacities. PHC delivers its programs through approximately 200 volunteers and we are eager to have you join us.


Board Member Job Description


The mission of PHC is to provide services and support to Gabriolans to improve their quality of life in a manner that maintains dignity, challenges inequalities, and builds community, through its own initiatives or in collaboration with other organizations.


Responsibilities of the Board


As the highest leadership body of the organization and to satisfy its fiduciary duties, the Board of Directors of PHC is responsible for:

  • Determining the mission and purposes of the organization.

  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management.

  • Strategic and organizational planning.

  • Fundraising and resource development.

  • Approving and monitoring PHC's programs and services.

  • Enhancing the organization’s public image.

  • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the executive director.

Responsibilities of Individual Board Members


Each individual board member is expected to:

  • Know PHC's mission, policies, programs, and needs

  • Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements

  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for PHC and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its mission

  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in board meetings

  • Participate fully in one or more committees

  • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to fully achieve the organization’s mission

  • Be a member in good standing of PHC and give a personal financial donation

  • Help identify connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy

Other Responsibilities

  • Sign a conflict-of-interest disclosure and a confidentiality agreement; Disclose any potential conflicts before meetings

  • Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions

  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters
