Reducing Food Waste, Nourishing Our Community

Earth Month Highlights

This Earth Day, People for a Healthy Community (PHC) is proud to highlight our commitment to reducing food waste while supporting the Gabriola community. In addition to our Weekly Grocery Program, PHC runs a food recovery and diversion program that ensures donated food is used responsibly and sustainably.

Volunteers carefully sort incoming donations into three streams: food for people, food for animals, and compost for gardens.

Food suitable for people is distributed through PHC programs like the weekly grocery program, school hot lunch and soup social just to name a few, while farm-safe food supports local livestock. Anything not suitable is composted to nourish PHC’s 1,900-square-foot gardens, which grow about 1,000 pounds of fresh food each year.

Help reduce food waste by supporting PHC’s Gleaning program, an organized effort where volunteers harvest excess to help people in need. Help us by donating to buy the equipment to start this program. Donate today at www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/11348.

Together, we can reduce food waste and support our community—one bruised apple at a time.
